McLinky Monday - Thankful For Food

This Week's Question @The RHOK is:
What is your favorite food at Thanksgiving dinner?

Lord knows this is a good topic for me.  I love food.  I love Thanksgiving...and I especially love Thanksgiving food!

Our Thanksgiving takes place at my Granny's house.  If you read one of my posts from last week, you know that my Granny is the best cook EVAH!  She's better than the Pioneer Woman, for reals.  She deserves her own cooking show.  We've thought about compiling a collection of her recipes into a cookbook, but how do you do that with a person who cooks with a "little of this" and a "pinch of that"?  I guess Granny's recipes will have to just continue to be passed down and enjoyed by her family.  Lucky me!

So, since my Granny is such a stellar cook, she is in charge of all the important stuff like turkey, dressing, and gravy.  As a side note, we have DRESSING, not STUFFING.  It's a rule at the Barney house...no stuffing.  The side dishes are left up to the rest of us...well, some of us.  There are a couple of people and I won't mention any name *achem, V and mom* who aren't allowed to don't really cook side dishes.  My Aunt Bev makes the best broccoli and cheese casserole you have EVER tasted.  She also makes some amazing hot rolls.  Somebody makes mashed potatoes...there are a couple of people who are qualified to do that.  (We take this food making business serious.)  I like to believe that I am pretty good at making green bean casserole.  I've confessed my LOVE of green beans on the blog before.  I think that if you really love something, that kind of helps you to be good at it...so, I'm a good green-bean-casserole-maker!

Here's my recipe: (I prepare for a large family, so excuse the quantities.  You may need to cut everything in half)

4 cans of green beans
2 cans of cream of mushroom soup
2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup milk
1 large can of french fried onions
Worcestershire sauce (If you can say this correctly, I would like to give you some sort of award)
black pepper

Combine green beans, soup, milk, worcestershire (to taste), black pepper (to taste), half of french friend onions and 1 cup of cheese.  Put ingredients into baking dish.  Bake for 20 minutes at 350.  Then top with remaining cup of cheese and french friend onions and bake for an additional 10 minutes (cheese should be bubbling/melty).

Sometimes I even substitute the cheddar flavored french fried onions.  It's delish!!

LOL! I had never thought about the difference between stuffing and dressing. I guess the only stuffing I've had is the boxed kind and it wasn't put in the turkey. Ha! We always have dressing.

You really, really should write down your grandma's recipes. You won't regret it. Even if you have to put "a little of this and a little of that".

So... what's the difference between stuffing and dressing? I'm so confused. I have no idea which one I eat.
I've never put cheese in my green bean casserole. Sounds yummy!
I have a garlic green bean recipe that the Doc loves. I just might have to pass that along to you someday.

I agree with you on the stuffing VS dressing...stuffing is a BIG NO-NO!
I make a wonderful garlic and basil green bean side dish...it is a nice change when you visit 3 homes for thanksgiving and all 3 serve green bean casserole...great now I am STARVING!

Well, my one of my favorites is sweet potato bake. You know...the creamy sweet potato with the crunchy brown sugar/pecan topping baked to golden loveliness. I discovered it when I moved south.

The other is stuffing. My mother makes killer stuffing and I miss it every year. :-(

Mmm-I love green bean casserole! -that's what I usually make too :) I never tried it with the cheese though-might have to try that sometime. Also yeah dressing is much better than stuffing!

I lub me some green bean casserole but I'll have to respectfully disagree with one thing: MY MOMMA MAKES THE BEST BROCCOLI CHEESE CASSEROLE and I'm willing to bet Emma on it! (That means I'm gonna win the bet).

Ok...I'm getting ready to do my very first McLinky thingy ever. GASP!

I highly recommend you writing down your grandmother's recipes, even if it is just a little of this and a dash of that. My favorite is turkey and dressing...I LOVE it!!! Great, now I want some turkey and dressing.

Oh, we have dressing, too! (I just left a comment on Dawn's blog about it being "Southern Stuffing".) It's a fave of mine. Yum!

Its hard for me to give someone a recipe too because I cook the same way...I just throw things together. So when I try to write it up or type it on the food blog I have to approximate the measurements!

I've never really thought about the difference between stuffing and dressing BUT I actually love dressing and not stuffing....hmmm, I may have to re-word my post now!

I LOVE green bean casserole. LOVE.
Like, last year, we spent Christmas with relatives...and seriously, somoeone made some HOMEMADE, like with all fresh ingredients gb casserole. I thought, EW, I want my canned cream of mushroom, but it was SOOOO good.
Even though I'll still continue to use the canned stuff cuz I'm too lazy to do the whole fresh thing. And I like it just fine the way I make it. But your recipe sounds even better!!! I'm fat. I love food.

Oh yeah baby.....a HUGE difference and if you notice, when I say dressing I say cornbread dressing! There are a lot of different types out there!! Green bean lover? Me too!! Only I don't get to make the casserole, you know I don't know why, my DH doesn't hardly touch them anyway and I can make them with fatfree cream of mushroom. I may just do that!! Love it! Love green bean casserole! So is this 'a little this, a little that' something that runs in the Barney blood? My mom does the same thing!!
If you ever get that cookbook made, I'll be the first to buy one!! Your Granny can cook!!

My BFF introduced us to a sweet potato casserole that is to die for so I guess that is now my favorite Thanksgiving dish! I love green bean casserole too! Thanks for sharing the recipe!

Have never added cheddar cheese in gb casserole. I so have to give that a try!
